Around Indianapolis

Spotlight on a local gem

“It does not require many words to speak the truth.”  – Chief Joseph, Nez Perce (Nimiputimt)

Harrison Eiteljorg spent a lifetime enjoying, admiring and collecting Native American Art.  A benefactor at heart, he donated his art collection so that we can all appreciate the rich tapestry of our native lands and its peoples. That collection became the beautiful gem located on the corner of Washington Street and West in downtown Indianapolis, now called the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art.  It contains totems of our country’s story, our visual history and art that continues to inspire us today.

Since the opening of the Eiteljorg in 1989, the staff has greatly increased the collection, expanded the space and polished this rare gem to a rarified national level.

The museum features one of the most awe-inspiring Native American and Western art collections in the world. Included in the collection are traditional and contemporary pieces by renowned artists such as T.C. Cannon, N. C. Wyeth, Andy Warhol, Georgia O’Keeffe, Allan Houser, Frederic Remington, Charles Russell and Kay WalkingStick.

The Eiteljorg has a spirit.  You feel it when you walk through the doors.  It seems only fitting that it is located in a city and state named after our forebears.  Visit often and enjoy.
